    Day 1 in Bangkok

    October 21, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

We arrived at around 8 am in our hotel (Ramada Plaza) and couldn’t help but fall asleep for 2,5h to finally get some desperately needed sleep. Neither of us slept much on the flight and surprisingly Pascal’s sleeping pills + Gin Tonic + Red Wine strategy didn’t work out either.

After failing to properly install the local Uber app (“Grab”) we decided to go the old fashioned way and asked the receptionist to order us a taxi to the city center where we had booked a tour for 1 pm. After 4( min in congested traffic we arrived in time at the meeting point. Mina, our precious local guide led our group to Wat Pho & Wat Arrun and explained with utmost passion her culture and gave us deep insights into Buddhism, Thailand’s history and the royals. Overall, we saw an incredible amount of temples and statues and even received our blessings from a monk. What could possibly go wrong from now on!?

Our group was super cool and rich in cultural backgrounds with American, Canadian/Irish; Jewish; Southafrican/Australian and German. The best part was riding water taxis and Tuk Tuks together like a gang. 😂

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo) as the temple was already closed when we got there. Mina then decided to take us for a stroll through famous China Town and invited everyone for a delicious dumpling and fish balls noodle soup 🍜 which totally made up for it. We definitely had a blast today and are now enjoying a few more street food bites (and drinks) before getting some proper rest tonight. What a fantastic start - we’re already in love with Thailand!! 😍

    Exploring BKK‘s Heights

    October 22, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Our second day in Bangkok started with not having breakfast in the hotel (apparently we were too late 😅🙈) so we went straight into the city.
We were lucky and found two lovely places to get something to eat. Pascal was enjoying the most fluffiest pancakes I have seen and I decided to have a super spicy ramen soup. When the waitress approached us asking if we are alright, we had to laugh. She said she was worried about us because of the spiciness. And I have to admit it was REALLY spicy! Now, we are Thai-spicy proven travelers. 🍜🍲

Afterwards we commuted by skyTrain (absolutely recommendable) to the Mahanakhon SkyWalk. It was so amazing to see all of Bangkok on the 71st level of this skyscraper. You also have the chance to walk on a glass floor. WOW – it really took me (Pascal not so much, he was even jumping on the glass 😅) some power of self-persuasion to step on it. But when you do, it is really worth it as you have a bird view-like experience. We soaked in this great atmosphere for some time while having two nice cocktails. Up there we could already spot our tonight’s dinner location: Sirocco Sky Bar with its golden dome. 😍🤩

Therefore, we got changed and travelled back downtown for our dinner experience on the 64th floor this time. It is hard to describe how it feels to be guest in this restaurant. Let me put it this way.
It feels like you are dreaming as everything looks just so stunningly unreal. ✨🙈
A vast view of Bangkok by night, with all the pulsing little lights. Perfectly set tables, nicely arranged and so many waitresses and waiters who are there to make the dinner experience a special one.
Besides amazing food and wine that we enjoyed, we also spotted many lightnings in the night sky. Thus, we were wondering how Sirocco handles evenings with rain and how that would work out, as all tables are set open air?? 🤔
🤭 Lucky us, we had the chance to witness it. 😅🌧☔️
After our first 3 courses, we needed to take a short break inside. But don’t worry, we could come back outside after roughly 15 minutes to continue with our main course. Later, it started raining AGAIN 😂 but this time, we decided to enjoy rainy Bangkok under our umbrella while having the whole terrace for ourselves. You could think: damn…why the hell did it need to rain TODAY!?
But for me, the rain and thunder made it even more special and distinct. ✨
In the end, it’s your perspective that has the power to experience something in a nice or negative way. So always watch your thoughts and feelings, they are powerful! DAY 2 – you have been amazing. Thank you!

One night in Bangkok and the world’s y…

    October 23, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Going to bed late and waking up early usually doesn’t work out well. Semmy and I got thrown out of bed at 9:35 by the alarm we set – instantly realizing that we needed to be fast to finally get the chance to experience THE BREAKFAST in our hotel. So, the day started a bit in a rush for us, but we managed to clock-in at the breakfast lounge well ahead of the 10:30 am deadline.

Still with a slight headache from yesterday's exquisite wines and cocktails, we hoped for an equally delicious meal to start the day. "Coffee, tea, orange juice, chicken fried rice, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and some toast please!" Oh my we were excited!!

A few minutes later our order arrived at the table and …. looked a bit like the Chef had a wild night, too. A simmered hot dog sausage paired with semi-fried bacon, wobbly eggs and some GENTLY toasted bread stared back at us. The juice was distantly related to real oranges (if at all) and we couldn’t help but see the similarity between the dish and us: Half asleep, half happy. :-D

To be fair, the fried rice and the scrambled eggs were actually quite tasty and the price of 500 THB (13 EUR) for 2 people was affordable, so we took it easy. Before heading out for the big city, we decided to fix our hairstyle (which was absolutely non-existent at the time) and do some “admin” stuff like saving fotos & videos to an external hard drive, posting stuff online and booking tours and sightseeing activities for the next 2-3 days.

At around 3 pm we headed out for the BTS sky train which we absolutely love because it is a) equipped with air conditioning and b) much faster than most other vehicles in traffic. Our first stop was Chatuchak Weekend Market which we think is an absolute recommendation to anyone who visits Bangkok. We found so many different delicacies, endless food stands with food halls where you can sit down and enjoy whatever you wish to eat, souvenirs shops and much more. Time flew by and we enjoyed some amazing spring rolls, pork skewers, fishball soups and some lovely sticky rice with mango for dessert. Add a pair of Chang beers and we both were in heaven.

At Around 7 pm we were ready for the next bucket list adventure: Kaosan Road!! Taxi Taxi and 25 Minutes later we were in the middle of a party mile which is best described by the word “unregulated”. There were clubs next to clubs next to bars next to clubs – all of them “competing” to attract guests by waving you in and offering happy hour specials while blasting super loud music onto the road. We were overwhelmed by the sounds, smells, people, music, noise – and decided to go for a half hour foot massage first. Well rested, we then set foot into a place called “Urbar” and after two beers decided to go all-in with buckets which then absolutely kickstarted the night into an unforgettable event. As it wouldn't do justice to the evening by trying to put into words what words can’t explain I will just give you a few hints – the rest is up to imagination. 😉

Buy 1 Bucket get 1 free – making friends with a local actor who is also a bouncer and a fitness trainer – and his friend a bodyguard – and a fake Aussie surfer guy who is actually from Britain – Laughing Gas – Click Cigarettes – Fried Scorpions – Beers Beers Beers – Pad Thai – Bye Bye

    Wonderful connections around the world

    October 24, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Ok - no more alcohol. Ever again. It’s 12:30 and we’re still in bed. 2 Aspirin and a shower later we manage to clear our heads and make plans for today and tomorrow. Still slightly hung over I CALL the same agency that we booked our first tour with (BigCity Experiences) - assuming the price would be much cheaper when booking directly instead of the easy to navigate online platform GetYourGuide (I was wrong). 5 Minutes into the call and three people later that I tried to spell our names to I hand the phone over to Semmy. Within what felt like 30 seconds she manages to clear the confusion I created and book a tour to the famous Railway Market Rom Hup and the Floating Market Damnoen Saduak (both approx. 1,5h southwest of Bangkok). *Mic drop*

With Semmy’s newly gained energy and my deepest appreciation for her we follow the recommendation from our friends (Sebastian & Denise) to get some amazing food at a place called Prachak Roasted Duck which won the trip advisor award in 2015.

While having a restaurant-like place in our minds we miss the entrance twice as the location turned out to be much more of a street-kitchen without a (recognisable) sign outside. However, as soon as we opened the manually operated sliding doors we were greeted and asked to sit down at the nearest free table - which was literally situated IN the kitchen. Dozens of people were busy preparing and serving food. We really enjoyed the roasted Duck and the dishes were quite cheap and definitely helped us to shake off the hangover remnants.

Afterwards we jumped on a Tuk Tuk to get to a Hindu Temple called Mama Uma Devi. Our ride took an unwanted detour because the driver unfortunately didn’t know where he was supposed to be going and wanted us to visit a fashion shop instead. After we clarified that we absolutely have no interest in the shop, he finally did drop us at the Temple. The place looked stunning with beautiful colored flowers, garlands and statues and had a ceremony going on. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to stay and grabbed another Taxi shortly after to get to the famous Buddhist Temple Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen.

There, we had a date with our former colleague Sandy from the SAP Academy who was born and raised in Bangkok. The three of us had a lot of fun and Semmy and I got so many new insights into Bangkok city life. Sandy showed us around the stunningly beautiful temple which has the biggest Buddha statue I have ever witnessed. It was a super cool experience and we felt very welcome while catching up on the last 5 years after we all left San Francisco to return to our local market units.

After the tour through the temple we took a Taxi to nearby Talat Phlu Market where we had some Thai food specialties such as fried grasshoppers, chicken legs and coconut ice cream (yum!!). Just as we sat down a train drove by the market very slowly but so close we could’ve easily touched it from our seats. This was such an unbelievable experience which gave us a taste of what to expect at the actual railway market. After we’d finished our ice cream Sandy brought us back to The BTS train station where we said goodbye. On our way back we decided to jump off at Siam Center to check out the BIG shopping Malls where we ended up buying some perfume.

Filled with so many new impressions we made our way back to Ramada Plaza and went to bed with a mind at peace.
