    First day in India

    February 20, 2023 in India ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

First day in India! Arrived at Delhi airport, got a local SIM card, took the metro to the main train station and walked to my hostel. After settling in in my 8 bed dorm room wandered the streets for a couple of hours, bought some flip flops (for the dirty bathrooms) and got some food!
Really great impressions so far. Everything is so chaotic yet organised at the same time. It feels like a huge organism.

    Exploring old Delhi

    February 21, 2023 in India ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Started the day showering out of a bucket, eating 3 bananas and trying to activate my SIM card. Now to the first day of properly exploring Delhi.

Started by going to the Red fort (is a historic fort in Old Delhi that served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors - Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned construction of the Red Fort in 1638 when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi)
WAs walking around the inside of the fort for a long time, afterwards there was a little theme park outside where I made some friends and we rode the ferries wheel together.

After this fun time I walked to Jama Masijd (one of the largest mosques in India, also built by emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 - 1656)

After a 100 selfies with mostly Indian teenagers at this mosque I walked all around the busy streets and markets of Old Delhi.

Walking in Delhi makes you tired because of the heat and constantly having to dodge Tuk Tuk’s, people, dogs, cows and anything else coming your way. Now i rest. and have more food of course.

    Exploring Southern Delhi

    February 22, 2023 in India ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Started the day with some reading and stretching on the Hostel Terrace.

After that went for breakfast in Delhis biggest community kitchen. Free food is served for anyone who asks 24/7 inside of the Gurudwara Shri Bangla Sahib (one of the most prominent Sikh temples in Delhi). The food being served was Dahl (lentil soup), Rajma (kidney bean curry) & Rotis (flatbread). Around 500 people were eating at the same time. When everyone was done the place was mopped and the next 500 people came in.

Second stop of the day was the Akshardham (massive Hindu Temple). Got totally lost on the way there and had to take 1 metro and 2 Tuk Tuk’s to reach it in the end. Sadly no photos were allowed inside.

Finishing off the day 8 veggie momos (Nepalese dumplings), 1 lime juice & 1 Aloo Gobi Curry (Potaot - Cauliflower Curry)

    First Days in Rishikesh

    February 23, 2023 in India

On the Road to Rishikesh, I was dreaming more or less…

After a very exhausting, sleep deprived and confusing yet beautiful train ride I arrived in a little lazy town called Rishikesh. Such a blessing to get here and hang out by the river under the mountain ranges after crazy and chaotic Delhi.

There is even little sand beaches here by the Ganges River. Perfect for swimming, relaxing and getting loads of reading done. Will start my Pranayama Teacher Training Course here on the first of March. So this will be my home for the next 3 weeks or so. Feels like a good place to really arrive in India and learn to go with the flow of everything here. Looking forward to going on some hikes, joining some yoga classes and visiting the famous Beatles Ashram.

    Monkeys, Cows & Gymnastics

    February 25, 2023 in India ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Easy days in Rishikesh. Already have somewhat of a morning routine here. Going to a little river spot with 4 bananas for some swimming, a little Workout, meditations, reading and breakfast.

Afterwards I was simply wandering around this little town. Met the local animal residents and explored the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. At 5 o’clock every day its time for the Ganga Aarti (Blessing of the Holy Ganga River). It’s 1 1/2 hours of singing, playing traditional Indian music, praying and lighting fires. Really beautiful ceremony. This evening it was extra special because there was a team of gymnasts preforming afterwards.

Walking back very slowly to my hostel, grabbing some street food on the way and now reading in bed. Already getting tired. Excited to sleep :)

    Beatles Ashram

    February 27, 2023 in India

It’s been some good and relaxed days her ein Rishikesh. Really starting to settle in in India, learning to accept the chaos and just move with it.

After a morning Yoga class I went past my favourite swimming spot for a quick dip and continued, much more refreshed, to the famous Beatles Ashram. The now abandoned ashram where the Beatles, Donovan, Mike Love and the Farrow sisters stayed for 3 months in the late 60’s. Really cool place to visit! Spent most of the day there just walking around and exploring the ruins. The house where the Beatles stayed is also clearly marked and I met some other lovely people around there who had a guitar, so we played and sang some songs obviously! Really nice to be in the same place where they wrote so many of the White Album songs.

For sunset I sat by the Ganga and enjoyed some street food. Now eating some bananas with peanut butter for desert. Time to sleep soon.

    Caves as Scooters

    February 28, 2023 in India ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

First little scooter tour of the trip! Rented a little scooter and drove to some near by caves. A lot of the caves in India are considered as holy and very spiritual because a lot of famous yogis used to live in them in the past to seek enlightenment. Therefore a lot of pilgrims pass by them.

I also visited the “Jesus Cave”, a cave where allegedly Jesus lived and meditated in during his “lost years”. There are a lot of theories about Jesus coming to the north of India between the age of 12 and 29, none of them however really confirmed.

    2 Weeks Pranayama Teacher Trainining

    March 14, 2023 in India

The last 2 weeks I attended a Pranayama Teacher Training in Rishikesh. Really great experience with a lot of insights, great teacher and really great people.
Pranayama is one of the eight limbs of Yoga and is crucial for a complete practice. It is an ancient breathwork technique which has been practiced is the Himalayas fir thousand of years. It involves controlling your breath in different ways and overall is used for relaxed the body and repairing the internal organs.

Alarm clock went off every day at 5:45 and the first lesson started at 6:30. We were advised to not have many external influences so most of the the bdays we were just practicing, eating, a bit of swimming and sleeping. At the end of the two weeks it was our task to teach a class ourselves which I enjoyed a lot! Now looking into starting a Yoga Teacher Training as well.

We had one day off during the course because of Holi festival. Holi festival is a massive festival all across India and Nepal, famous for throwing colours :) It was super crazy during the day, a lot of music, dancing, food and especially colours everywhere!

Also I started some bansuri (Indian flute) lessons and bought a little guitar (couldn’t resist).

    Scooter Trip to the mountains

    March 19, 2023 in India ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Drove up to Chopta with two friends after the Pranayama course. Around a 6 hour ride on the scooter with many stops because of all the amazing sights and towns we passed on the way.

It was super cold up here in the mountains but we managed to stay relatively warm by hiking a lot and spending most of the days by the fire or under a blanket.

This morning we went up to the ancient Tungnath temple. Alarms rang at 5:15 and we started walking around 6. Amazing Himalayan views on the way up. We reached the peak of the mountain (3,700 meters) around 10 o’clock. Enjoyed the views and some bananas and peanut butter up there.

    March 28, 2023 in India ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Traveling back to Rishikesh with Seb. Had to buy a raincoat halfway through the 7 hour scooter ride back because it started pouring down. Turned out to be a good ride in the end and felt really great to come back to warm & sunny place after the cold mountains.

Spent a couple of lazy days in Rishikesh sitting and bathin in the river Ganga, eating good food, exploring the old part of Rishikesh, going to the Beatles Ashram again enjoying the last days of having Seb in India before he’S heading back to Amsterdam.
