      Traveling to Hong Kong

      23 april, Hong Kong ⋅ 🌩️ 25 °C

Our journey to Hong Kong was probably the longest and most exhausting experience I've ever had. It started at 9 am in Pokhara (ace lasted more than 24 hours), where we took a very small domestic flight to Kathmandu, which was SO bumpy I was actually quite scared (the person behind me was also sick. James and I were both pretty nauseous too btw). We then waited in Kathmandu airport for ages as the King of Qatar's visit meant the whole airport was on lockdown until he left. We also went through a ridiculous number of checks and security, which became extremely aggravating. On our flight to Delhi, just as we were beginning our descent, when the captain announced that due to a thunderstorm (and extremely bumpy conditions) we weren't going to be landing in Delhi but in Lucknow, which was back half the distance we'd just travelled. Once landed there, we waited for 20 mins on the plane before being told we'd refuel here and take off again to Delhi. Our 2 hour flight became a 5 hour flight. We arrived so late in Delhi that there was no point going to our hotel, so we got a Domino's pizza and checked into our next flight to Hong Kong, departing at 4 am. Checking in was slow as the airline's systems were down and after no sleep and being exhausted, it was very hard to stay standing. After making it through security and into the departures area, we found no seats that did not have hard metal armrests, so it was near impossible to get any sleep, plus there were loads of mosquitoes there which I could feel and see biting me as I sat there.

As soon as we boarded our flight, James and I fell right to sleep and woke after several hours hungry, but soon realised they didn't serve free food on this 5-hour flight.

When we arrived in Hong Kong, it was like stepping into the future. After being in some chaotic and rundown airports, it felt weird walking through a pristinely clear space that had automatic flushing toilets with paper, tap water we could drink, and even showers all before immigration. Immigration was a breeze, and we collected our bags and found the bus stop that took us straight to our centrally located room. We got front seats on the double-decker bus and ogled the smooth roads and obedient cars. The hills surrounding Hong Kong are lush and beautiful, and springing up from below them are tall high-rise buildings which make it so interesting to just stare at.

Our Airbnb room was located in Chungking Mansions, which I would recommend Googling as it's a bit of a notorious place that used to be considered a ghetto (though we didn't know this at the time). The room was... um...a room. We knew it wasn't going to be that nice as it was one of three places that was within our budget in the whole city that wasn't just a mattress on the floor, but we still hadn't quite expected what we got. The entrance was through rough currency exchange and Indian food stalls, to the lifts in the centre. Our landing was then extremely humid and smelled of fried food, and it smelt of BO and more food in the apartment hallway. The apartment had obviously been roughly divided into 6+ rooms. Ours was only just a bit bigger than our bathroom at home and consisted of a bed, toilet and shower room, and a wardrobe. It was tiny, and the AC unit was old and loud and had one setting; cold, and no window (well, a window to a shaft that we were too scared to look into). We both played it cool and tried to pretend it wasn't the worst place we'd ever stayed in.

We quickly freshened up and headed out for some dinner at a ramen restaurant which cost us £45, more than we'd spent on a single meal for the whole trip.

We then took the bus to Victoria Peak where you get a stunning view of the city skyline from atop a hill and then took the old (but now refurbished) super steep tram down.

By now very tired, we then went back and slept to get rested for our trip to Disneyland the next day.

P.S. we did not sleep well as the AC was freezing when on and humid and stuffy when off, plus I'd all but cocooned myself in my silk liner for fear of bed bugs or other creepy crawlies getting on me. Plus when we woke up it was as dark as when we fell asleep, so we had no idea what time it was all night when we stirred awake.

      Here we go!

      3 april, Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a 15-hour flight from Toronto, we arrived in Hong Kong a little while ago. Our connecting flight to Bangkok leaves in an hour and a half. We'd be way more excited if we weren't so tired, but I'm sure the sights and sounds of Bangkok will revive us.

I'm back in Thailand after after 18 years, and for Gi, it's her first time. So, in essence, with my memory, we'll be discovering together 😁.

      Here we go...!

      Met Cathay naar Hong Kong

      5 november 2023, Hong Kong

      Hong Kong: Ngong Ping 360

      5 november 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      Hong Kong: water, water, water

      6 november 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Day 7, Friday, 17th The Big Adventure

      17 november 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Military precision: Grandad & Grandma were up and at your home at 0930. Your Mum had the plan all in place for the four of us to go into Central for her appointment to see an osteopath about her carpel tunnel symptoms, back etc. Your night had been ‘ok’, and we managed to catch the 1040 ferry. Your Dad was feeling & looking somewhat better; he was going to work from your place while we were away.
You were placed in the front pack, and as usual dozed off, and we set for your catamaran trip. We walked up to Central Health, arriving 30 mins early, which was fortunate as it gave time for nappy changing, a quick feed then Grandma Trish & Grandad Euan had their trainer wheels 'kicked out from under them', so to speak!
We loaded you into the front pack (you gorgeous tiny person), and off we set to walk around the block for an hour! The only draw back was that it was lunch time in HK! Literally thousands of people from office blocks rushing to get lunch! Phew, It was difficult to walk along the footpaths, dodge vehicles, many of which were stopped waiting for their owners to return to be driven away. The chauffeurs looked bored, possibly saved only by their phones from total insanity.
Dusty, you were perfect as I walked around in the noise and rushing things! Just before 1pm we decided to go back to clinic! Just as well. You had had enough. We took you out if the front pack in time for Mum to rescue you with a feed and several changes! Back to Pret for sandwiches then the Lamna ferry home. You made all but the last few minutes happily.
Home to 93 Po Wah Yuen, where food and kicking  was achieved for you. What a star! Grandparents dismissed for the afternoon- back to the office roof! Lovely here - 24c cuppa & reading in the late sun, and of course writing up the album. Dinner around 6.30 pm, all going well. 🤞 we get back to your house to find that your afternoon had been hideous. We would give anything to find out the cause of colic, and of course, the cure! Dinner in shifts.
Mum & Dad tired out. They are so amazing.

      Day 15, 25th Nov. 2023

      25 november 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Saturday am and a relaxed weekend day. We woke fairly early, lazed around the office having a leisurely breakfast and sitting in the roof balcony. Lucy & Dave were having a much needed slow time. Dusty, you are the quintessential non morning person; no actively, then come afternoon, and frequently at night, it’s all on! Today was no exception. The plan was for you and your Mum & Dad to come up to the office, but you slept, 💤. I had a lovely chat to Gill Salt in Bannockburn and eventually the Lammna Cassells family arrived. We went for walk up to the community garden at Tai Peng, looking across to Yung Shue Wong Village, up to the ridge, not far from the windmill.
Remind me never to complain about gardening in Palmie, ever again. Apart from marauding wild pigs, no water source close by, very sandy soil, rampant growth, typhoons etc, what’s not to like about gardening on Lamma?
It was a lovely walk. You were in the front pack with your Dad, but both of you were a bit too warm. We stopped off for an ice cream on the way home.
We returned to 93 Po Wah Yuen where, once you were set free you were in high spirits. We gave you a bath and you rewarded us ( especially your Mum) with beautiful smiles! The best yet!!! Then you reverted to your afternoon self🙂. About 15 attempts at putting you down so your Mum could get some sleep failed dismally. Your Dad got about an hours sleep!
Grandad was busy sorting out the mirror hanging for the bathroom. It’s now in place and looking good. Off you all went to friends place for an early dinner. You Mum looks as though she will be asleep the moment she sits down!
Grandad & I went to the Thai restaurant at the base of the steps into the village. We tried the pomelo salad and shrimps. We asked for it to not have chilli, but that was never going to happen! The following chicken was ok, but a tiny portion. The glutinous rice was just one big clump, but placed on a
banana skin. I did enjoy the fresh coconut. I wished I could scrape out the coconut flesh though!
Back home to the office after some minor purchases in the village. We had toast & jam (using the new toaster) followed by almond croissants and a cuppa! Excellent. Another day with you and your first real smiles. What bliss.

      Day 17. 27 th Nov

      27 november 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Today was predictably the opposite of yesterday. We stayed at home to give Lucy and Dusty a rest from yesterday’s ups and downs.
It seem to work. Dusty and Mum had two sleeps in the morning. It was 25c and felt very hot.
I started cleaning out the pot plant collection on your lovely roof, by shifting them out from the balcony wall and throwing the broken pots away and scrubbing the tiles. It was so hot on the roof I had to leave some for later, but the mosquitoes caught up with me then. Tomorrow I will get potting soil and bamboo stakes to support some of the plants.
Dusty, you were a treasure all day! We had lovely times as you tried out your bouncer for awhile, and you loved your bath again today. What a sweetheart. You did lots of feeding and exercise, so all together a lovely day. Thanks Dusty.

      Day 19, 29th of Nov. 2023

      29 november 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Another big morning out in Central for the Grand Parents with Lucy & Dusty. We took the 0930 ferry. Your Mum had been busy trying to coordinate the collection of the Christmas Tree. Yes, of course it’s a ‘real’ one in a stand. We always had a 'real' one on Palmerston North till your Mum went to Wellington when we slackened our standards and bought a large artificial one.
The tree arrived so now they have the record player in boxes, ready to be put in the already assembled shelves, and space to be made for the tree! I think that you will enjoy it as much as your Mum. Next year may be a different scenario🤣. The Grandparents walked you around the block for 45 mins. We pulled the pin on shopping on Pottinger Lane for Christmas decorations as you had had enough in the front pack. The afternoon heralded the introduction of a new sleep regimen! Your Mum has an app. with lots of good suggestions. 🤞well and truly crossed that this gives you more settled sleep. The Grandparents finished the re-potting of pot plants. Nice dinner of U.S.A. salmon. You were actually asleep when we left at 2000😘

Day 25, 5th Dec. Last Day of our visit

      4 december 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Would you believe it, you, Dusty had a sleepy morning. We could have done with some fore-warning, but no complaints. Even your Mum got a wee sleep. Grandad Euan removed the shower door to try and investigate its faults, while Grandma Trish came to grips with making your Dad’s ‘Signature’ dish, Chicken Pie, a la Jamie Oliver, plus a huge batch of Chicken Marbella, (some to freeze). Dusty, you slept on and woke up a bit ‘hung-over’. The later afternoon was taken up feeding, diverting and generally amusing yours truly. The Chicken Pie, cabbage & sweet potato was a hit with the support crew!
There were enough ingredients for another pie for the freezer. We walked home and started quietly and sadly packing up for the trip home to NZ. More cups of tea & chocolate, and wishing so much that our flight wasn't until Jocelyn started work on the next Monday.
